The Results Are In — Zombie Cupcakes

These are the zombie cupcakes I assembled.

Baked cupcakes (I used devil’s food…seemed appropriate)

While the cupcakes were still warm, I injected them with “Pus” — a small tub of cool whip, 2 bricks of cream cheese, a tablespoon of vanilla and about a half a cup of sugar (may add more sugar to taste of course)  Whipped everything together till it was smooth and tasty.  Put it in a pastry bag  and injected about an ounce of “pus” into the center of the cupcakes.  If you wanted to make the cream filling more pus-like (or to resemble any other bodily fluid…or even zombie-flesh green), you could add some food coloring.

If the cupcakes crack, it’s for one of two reasons. Either you’ve got too much filling in the middle or you let them cool off too much.  If they’re still warm to the touch, then it’s definitely the former.

On the top of the cupcakes i put a thin layer of green frosting to resemble grass.

after topping with grass, I dipped the cupcakes in a mixture of Oreo crumbs, heath bar bits, and autumn leaf sprinkles.  This gave it a nice outdoorsy rocky soil look.

Then I put the decorations on top. I was able to locate some zombie hands, like in the original design, but then I also found some zombie finger puppets.  As you can see, they turned out quite nicely. I think I prefer the finger puppets to the zombie hands.

EDIT:  Added more photos to the slideshow of ZOMBIECUPCAKES 2.0…..less leaves and gravel, more bones….

Map of Places that Google "Zombies"

Via http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/sep/23/zombie-map-world

“Using a keyword search for “zombies”, it visualizes the absolute concentrations of references within the Google Maps database.

The map reveals two important spatial patterns. First, much of the world lacks any content mentioning “zombies” whatsoever. Second, and related, the highest concentrations of zombies in the Geoweb are located in the Anglophone world, especially in large cities…

The results either provide a rough proxy for the amount of English-language content indexed over our planet, or offer an early warning into the geographies of the impending zombie apocalypse”

So many fall treats to choose from. This year I’ll be making these gruesome sweets,  undead cupcakes.  Devil’s food cake (I couldn’t resist the joke), with a simple cream cheese cream filling, topped with green frosting & dirt, with a zombie hand bursting through the surface.

I’ll be playing with the recipe a bit, of course.  To make a delicious cream cheese filling just combine a brick of cream cheese with a small tub of cool whip (or other tub based whipped topping), add sugar & vanilla to taste.  For added effect I’ll be dying mine blood-red, green, or ‘pus’ colored.

Also on my treat list are Oreo Truffles. They would be perfect about eyeball sized, and dipped in white chocolate.  Michael’s sells various shades of dipping chocolate for a talented and steady hand to add detail.  I’ve already planned for tiny pumpkin shaped Oreo truffles (dipped in orange colored white chocolate).  If I was more talented, I’d draw tiny jack-o-lantern faces on them all.

I may or may not be excited for Halloween.

And in case you haven’t prepared, the CDC has some great suggestions for your Zombie Outbreak Kit.

Halloween is fast approaching, and that means one thing.  Lots and lots of candy, mischief, and scantily clad women acting like its normal to go out in public half-naked.  While I weep for what Halloween is becoming, it is still my favorite time of year.  The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting cooler, and everything is pumpkin flavored.

Halloween is a tragedy because more and more people are skipping the creativity of homemade costumes and are just picking out whatever is left on the Wal-Mart shelves.  Women just add “furry” accessories to whatever lingerie they have and going as “sexy ______”.   While that’s all fine and dandy,  because people like mostly naked women, it lacks creativity.  Halloween should be a time of year to let your creativity run rampant.

My question is, haw can this year possibly top last year?

My costume is ready.  I’m itching for a party.  Then, when it’s all over and I can plan for next year, I still have something to wear to a convention.

What will you be going as?  Tell me in the comments.
